There’s nothing more damaging to a fitness routine than injury or soreness just like when participating in a Marine Corps workout. It makes you miserable and makes you feel like you can’t do it ever again. This is a common mistake and complaint of beginners, but it’s easily remedied, even if you’ve done a Marine Corps workout before.

Why You’re Sore

While ‘no pain, no gain’ isn’t entirely true, there is something to be said for that idea. When your body feels pain, it’s because you’ve injured it in some way. After a strenuous Marine Corps workout, your body may be extra sensitive because you have used muscles that you haven’t used before.

The muscles will have small tears in them from the exercise – but this is a good thing. These tears will be rebuilt when you have a rest day and then begin to create stronger muscles.

This isn’t to say that if you’re not sore that you haven’t worked out hard enough. As your fitness levels improve in the Marine Corps workout, you will not have that soreness, or at least, not to the same extent.

How You Can Prevent Soreness

A little soreness is to be expected whenever you challenge your body in a new way and should be celebrated. But you shouldn’t be stumbling after a Marine Corps workout. To prevent debilitating soreness, you should start off with a warm up at home before you get to the class or start the exercises. A few jumping jacks in place or a short walk will help get your muscles loose and warm. After that workout, you can then stretch the major muscle groups in your body – legs, arms, and back. This is a simple way to prevent soreness from any workout.

Another possible way to prevent soreness is to make sure that you’re properly fueled before, during, and after the Marine Corps workout. By drinking enough water, your body will be able to repair itself more easily. Drinking water with electrolytes (more commonly known as sports drinks) can help when you dealing with longer periods of working out or when you’re in hotter temperatures.

After a Marine Corps workout, you will want to drink water as well as eat something with some carbohydrates in it – a bagel, a piece of fruit, etc. When you get home or after you have finished exercising you should try to eat a balanced snack or meal with protein and carbohydrates. A piece of toast with peanut butter is good or perhaps a banana. Protein bars are good too, but make sure that they don’t include too much sugar.

When You’re Already Sore

Sometimes you will be sore even when you’ve done everything right before a Marine Corps workout. The best way to relieve soreness is through cold compresses directly on the affected muscles for no longer than twenty minutes at a time. Some athletes will actually jump into an ice bath for ten minutes following a strenuous workout.

Some creams and ointments are good for muscle soreness as well after a Marine Corps workout. If you’re looking for something natural, arnica is a great ointment to rub into your aching body.
