A Great Fire Fighter Workout For You

When it comes to fighting fires, most of us aren’t going to be doing it in the literal sense. However when it comes to our health, we might benefit from the way that fire fighters have to move when they’re in the throes of a blazing building.

There are a lot of things that a fire fighter needs to be ready for, and ways that you can ready your body for similar challenges. Here is a basic fire fighter workout that you can do at home.

Racing To The Scene

When a fire fighter is called to the scene of a fire, they don’t have the luxury of taking their time or waiting until they’re ready to go – when they are called to a building, they get up and go. You can use this as a part of your fire fighter workout. You can practice sprints anywhere, but the point is to push your body hard to run from one place to another.

The sprints don’t have to be long, but they do need to be continuous. Start at one end of your driveway or yard and run as fast as you can to the other side. If you’re winded at first, rest until you catch your breath, and then try another. Repeat until you can’t do anymore.

Racing to the scene isn’t the only thing that a fire fighter has to do. Many times they may have to run from one area of a fire to another, so they need constant stamina rather than the short bursts of the sprints. As a part of your fire fighter workout, you can incorporate longer times of running or jogging in order to build up lung strength and stamina.

Climbing The Ladders

It’s probably not a safe idea to take out your old painting ladder for your fire fighter workout. So to simulate the rigors of the ladder climbing, here is an idea for an exercise. You’ll want to be standing as you lift your left knee and raise your right hand, then switch with lifting the right knee and left hand. This works out the whole body and creates the same muscle memory as though you were climbing a ladder. Repeat the movements until you are tired.

You can also simulate going down a ladder by finding a handle or a sturdy chair and holding on. You then will drop down with your hands still holding on, lifting up when you get low enough. This uses your upper back muscles and simulates the feeling of carrying someone down a ladder as a part of a fire fighter workout.

Working Together

The real way to act like a fire fighter in your fire fighter workout is to bring a friend into your fitness routine. Fire fighters work together in order to put out fires and save lives; they can’t work by themselves. You can motivate your workout partner, encouraging each other to do better and work harder. A partner can also help you both to stick to your workout plans and reach your goals.

The fire fighter workout isn’t limited to these exercises, but these are some basics that will get you started. What you may also find is that some gyms are giving classes with a fire fighter theme, so that might work out well for you as well.
