Goal Setting Tips
With the start of the new school year I like to sit down and evaluate where I am with my goals, both long and short term. I also re-design my strategies on how I intend on reaching my
goals.
Self evaluation, goal setting and strategic planning in all areas of your life is important. It is also important to evaluate them several times per year.
Goals setting is an important motivational tool -- when used correctly.
Here are a few Goal Setting Tips to assist you in setting achievable goals but still allows you to push your limits:
Write down your goals -- if your goals are not written down then they are just a dream or wish. Also, when your write them down, state them in a positive manner, such as 'eat healthy' not 'don't eat junk.'
Be specific on your goals -- select a specific time frame or amount that you want to achieve. For example I will lose 10 pounds by Labor day or I will work out three times a week. This will give you concrete dates and time frames to stick to. It is also helpful to write them down in a contract form with yourself, sign and date it.
Make your goals realistic -- it is important to have goals that are achievable, such as a 10 pound weight loss in two months. If your goals was 50 pounds in two to three months that would be unrealistic. Make them realistic, but not so easy that you become lazy about the goals either. They should make you stretch your abilities, just not to the breaking point.
Set up a support system -- let others know what your goals are. They can help hold you accountable. Find a workout partner or fitness buddy. This will make it harder for you to skip workouts.
Re-evaluate frequently -- always check in with your goals to see if you are still on course. If not stop and develope a new plan of action, don't continue to do what is not working!
Once you have achieved a goal - reward yourself somehow. If your goal was to lose weight, buy a new outfit, get a massage or purchase a new fitness tool to help you with your next goal.
After achieving a goal, evaluate the process and find out what worked and what didn't. It is normally the things that did not work that will prove be the most helpful in setting the next set of goals.
